Considering up-skilling to pursue a new career? Read why Josh chose software development after leaving the oil and gas industry.
What were you doing before you came to CodeClan?
Since I left secondary school I have worked in the oil and gas industry. My first role was as a Technical Assistant, then a Document Controller and then finally I became a Production Planner at a company that provides flow equipment products, systems and services to oil, gas and process industries.
Why did you decide to retrain?
I was eight months into training as a Production Planner before I was made redundant. This was due to the downturn in the oil and gas industry and the company having to make financial cuts. After applying for similar jobs within the industry for four months and being unsuccessful, I decided that I would need to retrain in another skill set.
What attracted you to software development?
Software development attracted me as it is at the forefront of technology advancements and I think the way you can learn and then tailor software to solve a problem is extremely powerful, and would be an excellent skill to have.
Did you have prior experience of coding?
I studied coding at my final year of secondary school and also took a module in computer science for one semester at The University of Aberdeen. I was exposed to two different programming languages and some web development tools.
What are your future aspirations?
I plan on becoming skilled and efficient in software development to secure a job in a new career. With the amount of job opportunities within the software development industry I hope to build a strong career path.
