My Career Change Into Tech

Corporate Finance to Software Engineer

What were you doing before CodeClan?

I had tried a couple of careers – in corporate finance and also doing strength and conditioning coaching for athletes – neither of which suited me.

How old are you?

Have you always wanted to learn to code?

I had always liked the idea, but it was only in the last year that I decided it was definitely something I should pursue.

If you went to university, what did you study?

Economics and some mathematics.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Reading, snowboard/skiing, exercise, getting out into the countryside.

Before coming to CodeClan, had you tried any coding?

A small amount. I’d gone over some of the basics in online courses – enough to know it was definitely something I enjoyed.

What did you hope to achieve by coming to CodeClan?

To fast track my progress in developing employable skills as a software engineer, and to develop contacts with other students, instructors and potential employers.

Was the experience what you hoped it would be?

Yes, it was just what I was looking for.

What 5 words would you use to describe your CodeClan experience?

Fun, intense, motivating, creative, teamwork.

Are you happy you made the decision to come to CodeClan?

Definitely, it gave me the opportunity to really focus on fast tracking my learning, develop contacts, and to speak with a variety of professionals in the tech industry. I’m comfortable with self-education but the host of other benefits made CodeClan worth it for me.

What advice would you give to a future CodeClanner?

Prepare well. Don’t stress if you struggle with the pre-work, but if you put the effort in it well serve you very well.

What are you doing now that you’ve graduated?

I’m a software engineer at SIMUL8, a global leader in the development of simulation software. I’ve been able to hit the ground running here thanks to my preparation. I was able to pick up a couple of new languages and jump straight into writing production code.

Would you say the course has changed your life? If so, how?

The path from an economics degree to software developer certainly wouldn’t have been as smooth without it.

Do you feel happier now?

Happier in my career certainly. I hugely enjoy my work and have fantastic colleagues. I feel very lucky to be in a position where a job is not a chore anymore. There’s no such thing as the Sunday evening blues when work is genuinely fulfilling.

What type of opportunities has CodeClan given you?

The links with Employer Partners, and even with other influential figures within the tech industry proved to be a huge opportunity for me. I was able to get to know a variety of employers and companies, and to hone in on what I was most interested in professionally.
