My Career Change Into Tech

From Shelf-stacker to Test Analyst

Graeme

What were you doing before CodeClan?

I was working in my local supermarket, mainly on the checkouts.

How old are you?

27

If you went to university, what did you study?

Web Systems Development.

Before CodeClan, what was your dream job?

To be a Games Level Designer. Failing that, a professional footballer.

What made you want to work in tech?

I felt I had the right basic skills for the work, such as a strong ability to problem solve and an attention to detail.

Before coming to CodeClan, had you tried any coding?

I’d done a small amount at University, but only really HTML.

How did you feel when you first decided to come to CodeClan?

I felt a certain amount of trepidation as I was setting off into the great unknown but also excitement at potentially starting a new career.

What 5 words would you use to describe you CodeClan experience?

Frantic, Fun, Formative, Challenging, Crazy.

What was your favourite part of the course?

Project 2 – getting to work with other people, bringing our knowledge together to try to build something from scratch.

Is it all work no play?

When the work allowed it we found time to have fun. Sometimes that was as small as just pausing for some chat in between subjects. Sometimes that was celebrating finishing projects by going to the pub and maybe a small spot of karaoke.

Are you happy you made the decision to come to CodeClan?

I am.

Do you have any regrets?

None. If I hadn’t joined so early then I would regret not joining sooner.

Now that you’ve graduated, what are you doing?

I’m working for a small start-up as a Test Analyst.

Would you say the course has changed your life? If so, how?

The course has definitely changed my life for the better. Before I had no real direction in my work life. I knew I was capable of so much more but had no route to advance.

What type of opportunities has CodeClan given you?

They opened the door into the industry, gave me the knowledge to earn a role and introduced me to employers looking for people just like me.
